{San Giorgio Maggiore}
The first leg of our Italian journey began in Venice. And wasn’t it the place to start?! I was in awe the moment we stepped out from the train station; a canal stretching as far as the eye could see, with its candy-striped palina (mooring poles) adorning either side, and pastel coloured apartments following it along. It’d be hard not to get lost in Venice – it has many winding canals and narrow streets, which at night are unlit and particularly difficult to navigate. The little market behind the Ponte de Rialto, and the quaint shops near Piazza San Marco, had a lot to offer; gorgeous Murano glass and extravagant Venetian carnival masks. I had to keep pinching myself as we wandered the city. It was just surreal; hard to believe that such a magical place wasn’t any more than a movie set.
